Curriculum
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
The primary focus of Gracie Barra Tampa is teaching and training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for self defense, sport and fitness. Below are descriptions of the programs and classes offered.
Fundamental Program White belts only.
The beginners curriculum is designed to build a solid foundation that will carry the student throughout the rest of their training. Emphasis is placed on learning and drilling the fundamentals, including how to:
- Breakfall.
- Escape pins and inferior positions.
- Defend chokes and armlocks.
- Open and pass the guard.
- Gain and maintain superior positions.
- Perform basic takedowns, sweeps and submissions.
- Safely get to your feet while being attacked.
- Block and counter punches, kicks and headbutts.
- Escape headlocks (standing and on the ground).
- Escape bearhugs.
Intermediate & Advanced Three stripe white belts and up.
Once a student has a strong base in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, they can further develop their skills and techniques with more advanced instruction. The topics of these classes include:
- Advanced strategies and combinations.
- Advanced sweeps and submissions.
- Advanced escapes and counters.
- Advanced open guard.
- Leglocks.
Children Fundamental Ages 5—13. White belts only.
Children learn the same effective techniques as the adults in fun and exciting classes that teach self defense and preservation skills, develop coordination and fitness, and foster respect and personal discipline.
Children Intermediate & Advanced Ages 5—13. Yellow belts and up.
After completing the Fundamental program, children graduate to an Intermediate & Advanced class that continues to build on their basics while expanding their knowledge of the art.
Judo Open to all.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu owes much of its heritage to the art of Judo. These classes teach breakfalls, footwork, grip fighting, throws and takedowns.
No-gi submission grappling Open to all.
In no-gi classes, students learn to apply the techniques of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu without the gi.
All Levels and Children All Levels Open to all.
These classes and open mats provide an opportunity for students of all ranks to train together.
